Hope Is An Anchor Meditation (Hebrews 6:19-20)
by James Harvey
We who have run for our very lives to God have every reason to grab the promised hope with both hands and never let go. It’s an unbreakable spiritual lifeline, reaching past all appearances right to the very presence of God where Jesus, running on ahead of us, has taken up his permanent post as high priest for us, in the order of Melchizedek. (Hebrews 6:18-20 MSG)
We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek. (Hebrews 6:19-20 NIV)
Last week, my Riverfire meditation was on “He Makes All Things New” from Revelation 21. My first deep dive in the Father’s heart for 2026.
The Holy Spirit reminded me that he’s in the business of making everything new. It’s a process. We are his project. He’s designed us, created us, breathed us into the world, and immediately get snared with sin & rebellion. No one, except Jesus Christ is righteous.
So, here God is, continuing to create human beings all over the world every day, breathing them into existence, only to watch every single person get snared by sin and enslaved by Satan.
And for every person, he has a unique, special plan; a beautiful destiny to reach them with his love, deliver them from hell, give them rebirth through Christ, fill them with the Spirit, and raise them in spiritual maturity and eternal covenant love, transforming us from slaves to adult co-heirs with Jesus.
But the journey is long. If you haven’t read John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, I’d give it a go. That story is the Hebrews 11 story of the faith journey we’re all on through suffering, spiritual warfare, and persecution.
So, what keeps the disciple of Jesus going through all the pain and sorrow of being faithful in a chaotic world? Staying true to Jesus amidst constant pitfalls, temptations, trials, and trouble?
Hope.
Glorious, marvelous, unbelievably beautiful hope.
Hope is the campfire you gather around to get warm, refresh & renew, tell stories, and sing songs. Hope is the dawn you know will arrive no matter how dark is the night. Hope is the knowing the pain will not be forever. Hope is the relief that comes, even if just for a moment, to remind you that you’re not alone.
Hope is an anchor that reminds you of the safe harbor and beloved family waiting for your return while you’re on the high seas facing dangerous foes and other ships hunting you to try to sink you and plunder you.
Satan can’t take away our hope. He can attack us. He can try to poison us. He can try to distract us. He can send demons or toxic people to us to try to destroy us. But he can’t remove our hope. Our hope is powerful, steadfast. It’s not rooted in our faith, it’s secure in Christ. Christ is our hope, and we are in him.
Remember hope today. You might be starting the new year exhausted, or frustrated. It may be a new year on the calendar, but for you, it doesn’t feel new or fresh; just another day at the office. Remember hope. Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you about hope, and to breathe fresh wind into your sails.
Shalom, Maranatha
